Embroidered Patches

Embroidered patches have been on my radar for the past few years, but I’ve never been able to find a jacket or bag that was patched to my taste. I started collecting patches back in 2015 when I found some at the Ed Sheeran concert in Seoul. Originally, I was planning to sew them onto a utility jacket, but I didn’t like how the bright green color looked against my olive colored utility jacket. Fast forward to this year: I saw an image of a backpack covered in patches by Marc Jacobs and decided to do a bit of D.I.Y! I added the patches from the Ed Sheeran concert as well as some patches related to London.

The thing I love most about this D.I.Y. project is that it represents in it’s entirety the things I like or simply designs that take my fancy. It’ll probably take a long time for me to fill up my “blank canvas” backpack, but I think in the end it will be well worth it.

I spent some time experimenting with the layout of the patches, before ironing them on to my bag. So far I think I like keeping patches with similar colors in similar areas. One thing I had liked about the Marc Jacobs version was that it had an overarching theme of “paradise.” I also liked the big, bold, and colorful patches that really grabbed the eye. Unfortunately, I haven’t found any patches like that so far. All the ones that I’ve been able to get so far have been rather small. I still really like the ones that I’ve collected so far though. They’re all very playful and add so much color to my backpack.

Some people might think it’s rather odd that I’ve placed a chicken on top of the double decker, but it symbolizes so many things for me. For one, it reminds me of the Blue Rooster that I saw the first time I visited London. The chicken is also special for me because both of my parents were born during the year of the rooster. There are a few other stories, but they’re mostly insider jokes so I’ll leave it at that!
