Evergreen Manual Mode: Aperture

silentlyfree-aperture-04-2

There are plenty of photography classes and books that will teach you the intricate secrets of using the manual mode of your camera. Well, there’s so many things to remember when you’re first starting off in manual mode that it’s easy to get things mixed up. Before you know it you’ll have pushed your DSLR into the camera bag and stored it somewhere in the closet. So this is a simple way to remember how to set your aperture to get you up and running.

Once upon a time

in a faraway kingdom

There were 11 trees.

It was a treedom.

You can remember the number 11 because

if you have 11 trees it looks like this:

11111111111

A lot of straight trees in a treedom.

But we don’t want to sit around typing out all those trees

So we’ll shorten it to 11.

Notice that in the previous picture you can see all 11 trees in the treedom clearly.

In this picture you can only see the ONE TREE that will RULE THEM ALL.

The rest of the trees are just blurred nicely in the background.

So basically, when you choose your aperture you’re choosing whether you want

ONE TREE to RULE THEM ALL

or if you want to see all the 11 trees in the treedom.

If you want ONE TREE to RULE THEM ALL

you scroll your aperture closer to F/1

&

If you want to see all 11 trees in the treedom

you scroll your aperture closer to F/11
