Interlaken: A Switzerland Fairytale?

Once upon a time, in a far away land, there was a magical kingdom surrounded by an enchanted forest. Where cottages gathered around the hillside, and cows were adorned with collars and bells.

The crisp air purged all the evil from the city, but as is the case with all fairy tales restoration came at a steep price. Every meal, every souvenir felt as though I was giving up all my hair for a witch’s spell, or Rumpelstiltskin scampering off with my firstborn. When I was charged for extra water for my tea, I wondered if I was paying for someone to draw water from a wishing well or to hike up the mountain to get water from an enchanted spring.

Everything was very much alive. The river reverberated with powerful energy and flowers were everywhere. These were not the dusty wilting flowers found on the streets of a metropolis; they were vibrant, youthful, and provided accents of color to the city. Everything was so peaceful and I had never felt safer anywhere in Europe. It seemed impossible for anything bad to happen here. It sort of makes me wonder why Mary Shelly decided to set Frankenstein in Switzerland. Of all the places in the world she had to choose Switzerland. It makes me wonder if she kept herself cooped up indoors the whole time she was there. Switzerland felt more like a setting for fairy tales than a horrific science experiment gone wrong.
